Program Description

The school counseling program at Springfield College develops critically conscious counselors, advocates and leaders. Schools across the country, especially in our urban and traditionally underserved communities, need school counselors who are caring, well educated and prepared to meet the increasing social-emotional, academic and career demands. With a strong emphasis on fieldwork, the Springfield College School Counseling graduate major prepares students to take on the multifaceted roles of today’s school counselor. This includes the development of skills to counsel and assess youth, serve the needs of a diverse student population, and effectively collaborate with students, parents, and school personnel. Students can graduate from this 60 credit program eligible for licensure as school counselors and school adjustment counselors. Our graduate counseling majors are committed to graduating counselors with a strong professional identity, a broad knowledge base, the skills and expertise necessary to serve people in their chosen field. Programs share over 40 credits of coursework and electives, allowing students to gain additional expertise or concentrations. Grounded in theory and best practices, our graduates are advocates of change, and able to recognize and address individual and systemic issues of inequity and injustice.

Additional Program Information

School Counseling licenses require 450 hours of practicum experience while Adjustment Counseling licenses require 60 credits and 900 hours of practicum experience.

If you opt out of the Adjustment Counseling, you must complete 100 hours pre-practicum spread over the first year and as a part of SCCN 601 & COUN 665.

All students must complete a minimum of 20 hours pre-practicum in first semester SCCN 601.
