EDUC 644 - Financial Decision Making in Educational Institutions

This core course explores the financial aspects within public and private K-12 and higher education organizations, with particular emphasis on the use of financial information for decision making. Specific topics include; federal, state, and local funding; budget creation, budget oversight, and generating additional financial support through fundraising and grant writing. Given limited sources of institutional funds for the advancement of programs and research, leaders and scholars must be prepared to seek alternative funding from the federal government and private foundations. In this course students will develop effective grant writing skills essential to obtaining grant funding in this extremely competitive market. Topics underscore institutional mission, resource allocation, forecasting, and other planning and control activities within educational structures. Emphasis is placed on critically examining how budgets support the mission and equity development within the institution. These skills are necessary for the future success and administrative performance within institutions of education.
