Computer Science/Criminal Justice, B.S.

Program Description


Computing is part of everything we do-from health and medicine to business and education, from analysis, research, and engineering to art, design, and entertainment. In fact, the computer science occupation is expected to grow 11 percent, faster than average, between now and 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. That’s why the Springfield College computer sciences/criminal justice major offers courses that have direct relevance and importance across industries, allowing you to achieve your career goals. 

The computer science/criminal justice major is ideal for students seeking to become involved in areas where the two fields intersect-primarily in the cybercrime industry. The computer science curriculum provides students with advanced skills that are sought after by employers, such as database skills, multi-platform programming development skills, analytical skills, and good, basic business intelligence, while the criminal justice curriculum provides students with answers to critical questions about the legal process, the psychology behind why individuals commit crimes, and how governments should balance individual rights and public safety.

Advanced Standing and Program Standards


In order to continue in the computer and information sciences major, students must qualify for advanced standing during the spring semester of their sophomore year, prior to registration for junior-level classes. In order to qualify for advanced standing as a computer and information sciences major, students must:

  1. Achieve at least a 2.500 cumulative GPA.
  2. Achieve at least a 2.500 GPA in their program requirements.
  3. Complete all program requirements with a grade of C- or better. Courses in which unsatisfactory grades were received must be repeated.
  4. Be making satisfactory progress toward the completion of their program of study, as determined by the academic advisor and the department.
  5. Have completed, or be in the process of completing, any program requirements in which an incomplete was received. (Incomplete grades in program requirements must be completed by the end of the semester following the receipt of the incomplete, unless an extended deadline has been negotiated.)

Students who do not meet these minimum standards are placed on departmental probationary status for a period of not more than one year. A student will be removed from departmental probationary status if and only if the minimum standards for advanced standing have been met. A student who is unable to meet the minimum standards during the probationary period will be subject to being dropped from the major. Once achieved, advanced standing must be maintained in order to continue in the major and complete the program.

This Core Curriculum is faithful to the Springfield College mission and further strengthens the Humanics philosophy of educating students in spirit, mind, and body. It is a cornerstone of a Springfield College education. Regardless of one’s major, it provides a strong, developmental, and holistic foundation for leaders in service to humanity. Upon completion, all graduates will be prepared to learn, lead, and serve in diverse, multicultural, and global contexts as well as in any career path they may choose. They will have the knowledge, habits of the mind, skills, and abilities to face unexpected situations and challenges, the values and attitudes for self-motivation and a vision of service that stems from hope, optimism and making a difference, as well as the self-determination to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
