Program Description


The counseling program at Springfield College develops critically reflective, exceptional, counselors, advocates and leaders. We strive to graduate counselors with a strong professional identity, a broad knowledge base, the skills and expertise necessary to serve people in their chosen field. Grounded in theory and best practices, our graduates are advocates of change, and able to recognize and address individual and systemic issues of inequity and injustice. As professional counselors, our graduates are trained in humanics philosophy to serve individuals in mental health, school, and rehabilitation counseling settings. The core curriculum includes 30 shared credits. The three concentration areas allow students to specialize in their chosen area of counseling and gain eligibility for licensure or certification. Students take selectives to meet the 60 credit program requirement for state licensing requirementsin all but the General Counseling concentration. Courses are available on three campuses and are delivered through face to face, hybrid or online formats.

Note: There is no direct entry in the General Counseling concentration.  Students can only be added by internal transfer or Masters Along the Way with support from the corresponding Department Chair.  The General Counseling concentration is also 48 credits so there are no research course options required for M.S. degree path and/or additional selectives to complete a minimum total of 60 credits.

a. Clinical Mental Health Counseling Concentration (18 credits)


b. Rehabilitation Counseling Concentration (21 credits)


c. School Counseling Concentration (21 credits)


d. General Counseling (18 credits)

Students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, or School Counseling concentration must select COUN/CMHC/RHCN/PSYC or SCCN coursework to complete a minimum of 60 credits.
