WLPL 390 - Wellness and Physical Literacy in our Community This course is designed to be a culmination of the Wellness and Physical Literacy course sequence. Students select this course based on their Wellness and Physical Literacy Plan from their WLPL 200-level course. Through in-class activities and community service, students demonstrate, examine, and reflect upon current personal wellness practices and physical literacy, and identify and explore college and community resources for participation in wellness practices and physical activities. Within this course, students co-create and implement a project through the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement to engage community members in wellness practices and movement-based activities based on the needs and interests of the participants. As a culminating project for the WLPL sequence, students develop an actionable wellness and physical literacy plan for their future, including their remaining time at Springfield College to fulfill the Wellness Passport. The Wellness concepts integrated throughout the semester align with the domains in the Wellness Passport: Physical, Mental, and Meaning and Purpose. The Wellness and Physical Literacy course sequence is designed using Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) as a framework to facilitate intrinsic motivation through autonomy, competence, and relatedness. By building relationships within the class and with community members, making choices grounded in evidence and reflection, and developing skills in engaging others in wellness and movement activities, students prepare to design and select activities for their Wellness Passport and beyond.
