RHDS 230 - Disability and Society


The purpose of this course is to increase students’ knowledge of the psychosocial aspects of disability and to assist them in gaining an understanding of a wide variety of disabling conditions and individual adjustments in relation to disability. Topics include but are not limited to the medical, psychosocial and cultural aspects of disability/illness, the historic treatment of people with disabilities, pertinent disability related legislation, the social construction of disability, stereotypes, privilege, oppression, disability identity, culture, pride, and advocacy. Attitudes and prejudicial actions toward those with disabilities as well as strategies to eliminate this form of social injustice will be addressed.
