MSSW 611 - Social Welfare Policy 1 This course, a basic introduction to American social welfare policy, first examines the history of the American response to need with particular emphasis upon the role of the social work profession. After providing this historical framework, it assesses major contemporary governmental and non-governmental initiatives to fulfill human need, emphasizing a breadth of social policy issues, such as poverty, discrimination, health care, housing, food, child welfare, substance abuse, employment, and social service delivery.
