BIOL 276 - Medical Genetics This course introduces the field of genetics as necessary to understand current
applications of medical interest. The transmission of hereditary information during
cell division and sexual reproduction are discussed followed by the delineation of
various inheritance patterns and the use of pedigree analysis. The molecular bases of
traits are revelaed, including genetic mutations and how they lead to disease.
Finally, recombinant DNA technology, genome analysis, and other current genetic topics
are discussed with respect to genetic testing / screening and the treatment of genetic disorders. Though fundamental principles in genetics are taught in this course, the main focus will be on the basis, diagnosis, and treatment of genetic disorders.
Prerequisites & Notes BIOL 121-124, CHEM 121-124 or permission of instructor.
