Pass-Fail Grading

Undergraduate students, during their sophomore, junior, and senior years, may elect to take one course section per term on a pass/fail basis. A maximum of 12 credit hours is permitted, excluding courses that are automatically graded on a pass/fail basis. Students wishing to take a course pass/fail must submit a completed Pass/Fail Approval Form reflecting approval from their advisor and the course instructor by the ad/drop deadline for the respective term and the course section(s) may not be used towards Core Curriculum requirements or for certain courses as restricted by the major.  An exception is provided for students completing a study abroad program at a partner institution who are able to designate one of their study abroad course sections to be taken pass/fail by the conclusion of the semester following their one aboard and that course section is permitted to be used towards a Core Curriculum requirement.

Graduate students wishing to take a course for pass/fail credit must complete a petition prior to registration and obtain the approval of the program director of their program of study.  In general, graduate program requirements may not be taken as pass/fail, unless specified within the program.

Grades for approved pass/fail courses cannot be changed to conventional letter grades. Credit for pass/fail courses counts toward attempted hours for academic progress. A grade of “P” (pass), will not affect a student’s GPA; however, a grade of “F” (fail) will affect the GPA.  Once approved, the pass/fail election is irrevocable.
