Academic Progress - Undergraduate

Academic progress is evaluated for all matriculated (degree-seeking) undergraduate students at the conclusion of every term in which they are enrolled, except for students who take a leave of absence or withdraw from the College during the semester.  Those students will maintain their academic standing in place at the start of that term.

An academic progress evaluation consists of a review of each student’s term grade point average (term GPA) and cumulative grade point average (CGPA). Term GPA is calculated by dividing the sum of the quality points earned by the sum of GPA hours attempted in the term.  CGPA is calculated by dividing the sum of the cumulative quality points earned by the cumulative GPA hours attempted.  See Grading and Grade Point Computation (GPA) policy for additional information.

Financial aid recipients are also advised to review the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy in the Financial Aid  section of this catalog.

Note: This policy language states the minimum standards for the College. Individual programs may have higher standards for continuation. Students are responsible for adhering to any individual program’s standards and requirements located in their official program, department, or School documentation.

Good Standing

All undergraduate students must earn a minimum of a 2.000 CGPA to be considered in Good Standing, not including first-time, first-year students who must earn a minimum of a 1.700 CGPA in their initial term. Whereas a student’s average number of credits earned per term and completion rate (e.g., credits earned divided by credits attempted) are not used in the determination of academic standing, the College will provide academic support to students who are not making satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion.

Academic Alert

Academic alert is an indicator that a student in Good Standing is experiencing academic difficulty.  Students whose CGPA is a minimum of 2.000 but whose term GPA is below 2.000 will be placed on Academic Alert and their official record/transcript will be notated accordingly.

Academic Probation

Students who begin a term in Good Standing that do not earn the minimum CGPA for Good Standing are placed on Academic Probation and their official record/transcript will be notated accordingly.  Students who are placed on Academic Probation must adhere to all of the following conditions:

  • They must participate in the College’s Academic Progress Program;
  • They are only eligible for financial aid if they are granted Financial Aid Probation through the Office of Financial Aid;
  • They are ineligible for participation in intercollegiate athletic teams sponsored by the Athletics Department (per NCAA regulations); and
  • They are subject to any other restrictions or requirements established by the Academic Affairs division, Student Affairs division, or other campus offices or programs.

Continued Probation

Students who begin a term on Academic Probation or Continued Probation whose CGPA is below a 2.000 but whose term GPA is a minimum of 2.000 are placed on Continued Probation and their official record/transcript will be notated accordingly.  Students who are placed on Continued Probation must adhere to all conditions specified within the Academic Probation status.

Academic Dismissal

Students who begin a term on Academic Probation or Continued Probation that do not earn a minimum term GPA of 2.000 will be placed on Academic Dismissal and their official transcript/record will be notated accordingly.  Students who have been academically dismissed from the College may appeal their dismissal to the Undergraduate Appeals Committee once. The timeline and requirements for the appeal will be specified in their dismissal notice.

If a student elects to appeal and the Undergraduate Appeals Committee grants the appeal, the student will be required to sign their appeal letter agreeing to adhere to all conditions therein.  This may include requirements specifying a maximum number of credits the student can enroll in each term, being placed on administrative leave of absence for a minimum of one term, and/or showing evidence of academic improvement before re-enrolling at the College.  Once the signed readmission letter is received, the existing Academic Dismissal notation on their official record/transcript will be updated to Academic Dismissal/Appealed/Continued Probation. Students on Academic Dismissal/Appealed/Continued Probation must adhere to all conditions specified within the Academic Probation status.

Students who do not appeal or those who have their appeal denied may apply for readmission to the College through the Office of Admissions after a minimum of one year away. While away from the College, students considering readmission are encouraged to complete pre-approved transfer credit (see Transfer credit policy for additional details.)  Readmitted students will return on Continued Probation and must adhere to all conditions specified within the Academic Probation status.
