RELI 208* - Indian Buddhism and the Buddhist Tradition This course introduces the student to the history, philosophy, and culture of
Buddhism. The critique of Brahmanical and non-Brahmanical systems, the life of
the Buddha, the rise of the monastic institution, and the development of philosophical
and meditational theories are presented. In addition, discussion focuses on the
emergence of the Buddhist tradition in Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, and China,
as well as on the relationship of Buddhism to contemporary life.
