MSSW 644 - International Social Work and Human Rights This course examines how the social construct of “Human Rights” can assist in
the development of economic and social justice, thereby becoming a strategy for
social change. It emphasizes the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, endorsed by the General Assembly in 1948, and today referred to as customary
international law. It first examines the history of the idea of human rights,
and then contemporary human rights concepts with emphasis upon the United States
and suggested research and action stategies.
