Prior Learning Assessment Policy

Springfield College offers a process to validate college-level knowledge acquired through prior learning for our online and regional campus programs. The Academic Advising Center oversees the process and monitors policies and procedures that are consistent with principles of good practice established by the Council on the Assessment of Experiential Learning (CAEL).  Credit is awarded for college-level knowledge/learning gained from experience and not for the experience itself. Policies and procedures regarding options for earning academic credit for prior learning are outlined in the Portfolio Handbook. (link the portfolio handbook).

A student’s graduation date and ability to participate in graduation ceremonies may be affected if prior learning deadlines are not met.  All prior learning credits must be posted to the student’s transcript by the following dates:

  • April 1st for May graduation

  • July 1st for August graduation

  • November 1st for December graduation

State Regulations Regarding Prior Learning Credits

Springfield College requires students to complete a minimum of 45 residential credits. A maximum of 75 credits can be awarded through transfer and prior learning. However, state* licensure requirements determine the maximum number of credits that may be awarded through prior learning.

*Note: Florida - No more than 30 degree credits may be awarded for prior learning.
